Sustainable innovation for Howdens

With more than 700 depots supplying thousands of products to local builders nationwide, Howden’s is the UK’s number one trade kitchen supplier.

Its business model is a powerful combination of locally empowered depot management teams served by a dedicated supply chain, which is both cost-effective and critical to the success of the ‘in-stock’ offer.

It is committed to protecting the environment, so as well as responsible sourcing policies, its supply division reuse, recycle and recover 100’% of all waste produced resulting in zero-landfill from the waste it produces.

Scott Pallets has been a supplier to Howden’s since 2010 and has formed a strong, collaborative working partnership over the years. From supplying standard new pallets to collectively re-designing fit-for-purpose products, and forging ahead with new initiatives that minimise environmental impact and waste through pallet recovery, Howden’s is tapping into the complete sustainable pallet offering from Scott Pallets.

Our geographical reach is vital in the Howden’s supply chain – providing security and flexibility of supply from three main manufacturing sites, with back-up from our wider network of sites during busy spells.

Paul Kinder, Packaging Design Engineer at Howdens, said: “We are continually re-designing pallets to accommodate a whole variety of changing product specifications – from electrical appliances to timber skirting. Throughout our depot network, there are millions of pallet movements every year, and safety is absolutely critical. In this regard, the technical team at Scott Pallets is invaluable – responsive and incredibly accurate, and always delivering above and beyond expectations.

“As a result of the work with Scott Pallets, we have introduced a colour coding system for our pallets that helps reinforce communication amongst the workforce. For example, the red bearer, tells our team that fork extensions are required.”

Through the strength of our account management and the additional skills of our technical team, we are always aiming to keep our customers one step ahead. Our close links with industry bodies, ensures that we also keep Howden’s up to date with the implications of new legislation and guidelines in relation to the impact of Brexit.
