Two-way at BSW

BSW is the UK’s largest sawmilling group, and our relationship with this business is very much two-way. As a major buyer of pallet and packaging timber, we have developed and diversified our raw material supply chain to deliver unparalleled quality and security of supply from sustainable timber sources. This is exemplified through our relationship with BSW which has been supplying our business for the past 20 years.

Alistair Wells, Procurement Director at Scott Pallets, said: “We work in a way with BSW that is unique, with a dedicated pallet timber controller at BSW who is in constant communication with our head office procurement team to ensure fulfilment of our timber requirements, which in turn, ensures our customers can depend on us to deliver.”

Branded workwear

Since 2012, the relationship has evolved and Scott Direct has been supplying BSW with branded workwear, PPE and health and safety equipment.

This includes kitting out BSW staff from head to toe, including hard hats, high viz, safety boots, and ear and respiratory protection, through to corporate branded office attire such as shirts, suit trousers and skirts, polo shirts and soft shell jackets. We also source specialist items such as forestry equipment and other protective items.

There is a really collaborative approach when it comes to meeting health and safety requirements explains Chris Pauley, Business Development Manager at Scott Direct: “We attend the BSW bi-monthly safety team meetings to support them in specifying the most appropriate safety kit and equipment. This not only helps to ensure the workforce is protected, but also saves cost through product rationalisation programmes, so we can really add value throughout the process.”

The annual workwear order encompasses a huge variety of individual product orders that are successfully managed, branded, individually man-packed and rolled out for the customer across all sites, including sporadic top-up orders as and when additional items are required. In addition, Scott Direct has led a product rationalisation strategy for BSW which has most recently seen significant cost savings on safety gloves, demonstrating 15% yoy cost savings; and on masks, demonstrating 30% yoy cost savings.

Scott Direct has also partnered with its product suppliers to conduct training for staff at BSW, including ‘train the trainer’ sessions and ‘toolbox talks’ for around 10% of the workforce at sites throughout the UK, from Fort William to Southampton.
